MONTREAL — The widespread travels of Luka Rocco Magnotta, both geographically and on the World Wide Web, are fuelling speculation he may have killed elsewhere.
Montreal police are working with the Los Angeles Police Department to determine whether Magnotta could have been involved in the murder and beheading of a 66-year-old man in California in January. The head of Hervey Medellin was discovered near the famous Hollywood sign by a woman walking her dog on Jan. 17. A police search turned up Medellin's hands and feet in the area, but the rest of his body remains missing.
Montreal police confirmed Thursday they've been in contact with the LAPD, state media reports, and will be passing on any relevant information that surfaces as part of their investigation.
Magnotta is the main suspect in the murder and dismemberment of Chinese student Lin Jun in Montreal. Lin's torso was discovered in a suitcase behind Magnotta's apartment building on May 29, and his foot and hand were mailed in separate packages to the federal Conservative and Liberal parties; the package destined for the Liberal HQ was intercepted by authorities before delivery.
Similar packages sent to two Vancouver-area schools are believed to be related. The victim's head remains missing.
Montreal police said Magnotta, a porn movie actor and male escort, may have been in Los Angeles at the time of Medellin's murder. Sun U.K. news reported a Los Angeles pimp claims to have hired Magnotta around that time, and that one of Magnotta's Facebook pages offered his services as a masseuse in Los Angeles weeks after the murder.
The L.A. Times, however, cited a police source who said Magnotta is not believed to be linked to the crime. The fact that Magnotta maintained at least 70 Facebook pages under various identities has made it difficult to be certain of his true whereabouts.
Online glimpses into Magnotta's self-obsessed world continue to surface. The latest discovery is a tape of Magnotta auditioning for a plastic surgery reality show on Canadian cable network Slice.
In the video, obtained by Global News, a producer asks him: "What do you see when you look in the mirror now?"
Magnotta replies that he see "all the little flaws," then says "this might sound really weird," but he wants two small bumps he refers to as devil's horns removed from his forehead. He adds that no matter how much cosmetic surgery he has, he will probably never be satisfied with his appearance.
Magnotta, 29, has been held in a Berlin prison since he was arrested there Monday. German prosecutors said Thursday he likely will be extradited back to Canada by the end of June.
In Montreal, the mayor's office said a moment of silence will be held Monday before the monthly city council meeting in honour of the memory of the murder victim. Mayor Gerald Tremblay has extended his condolences to Lin's family members, who arrived in Montreal Tuesday to retrieve their son's body.
Memorials have cropped up at the corner store where Lin used to work, and at a statue of Norman Bethune near Concordia University's downtown campus. Concordia's Chinese Students Association has organized a fund — the Lin Jun Rest in Peace Foundation — to pay the family's expenses while they are here. Body parts belonging to 21-year-old Omar Laparra were found floating in plastic bags along the Biscayne Bay in 2009, according to Miami Sgt. Confesor Gonzalez.
Gonzalez wouldn't give too many details about the case but said that Laparra's arms and legs were removed after he was killed, which is similar to the way Jun Lin, 33, was murdered and dismembered at the end of May.
Lin's remains were found on May 29, stuffed in a suitcase behind a Montreal apartment building. Magnotta is suspected to have mailed parts of Lin's body to Canadian political parties and two schools in British Columbia.
German police arrested Magnotta, 29, in Berlin, Germany, on June 4. Montreal police charged him with Lin's murder.
Gonzalez told QMI Agency on Saturday that he was only made aware of the possible links between Laparra's murder and suspected killer Magnotta when a Montreal journalist called him.
"The journalist mentioned that Magnotta may have travelled to Miami," he said. "But so far there is nothing that indicates these two murders are linked."
Gonzalez said he will "absolutely" call Montreal police to discuss the case.
However, Gonzalez said that aside from the dismemberment aspect of the two files, there isn't much else similar.
Magnotta and Lin knew each other, according to Montreal police. A source told QMI the men were lovers and Magnotta became upset because Lin ended the relationship and was seeing another man.
Gonzalez said Laparra's murder was likely random. Moreover, he said that there "was no indication the deceased was gay."
Gonzalez said Laparra was living in Miami with his brothers. He went to a restaurant the night he went missing and drank heavily with friends, including one of his brothers, said Gonzalez.
A gold-coloured Honda Accord allegedly picked up Laparra on a Miami street corner "and that was the last time anyone saw him," Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said the Miami angle has been "over-represented in the media" and "it's a long-shot" that it's connected to the Lin murder.
There have been several other reports of Magnotta sightings and other crimes linked to the suspected killer as the case has garnered international media attention.
There were reports that police in Gatineau, Que., were looking into links between Magnotta and a murder on their territory.
Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said he only heard of the possible Miami connection through the media. However, he confirmed that the Los Angeles police is checking any possible link with Magnotta and the January murder of Hervey Medellin, a 66-year-old gay former flight attendant. Although the L.A. Times reports a police source said Magnotta is not believed to be connected to the slaying.
Lafreniere said the Montreal police have received close to 500 tips from around the world regarding the Magnotta case. He said Interpol, which placed the man on its international wanted list, received 2,000 tips.
Police haven't yet established a timeline of Magnotta's whereabouts, a difficult task as the suspected killer travelled under different names, Lafreniere said.
"Usually it's not long, sometimes a matter a minutes to establish a timeline," Lafreniere said. "But for him, it's different."

They met at a planned threesome in a Toronto apartment but he became so enamoured with her that the other man at the *** party allegedly stormed out.
Magnotta is said to have spared no expense during their courtship and often took her to exclusive Toronto restaurants in rented limos.
However his performance in the bed left alot to be desired, said the woman, who moved in with Magnotta in 2006.
She added: "He didn't have much of a high ***-drive when I was with him, to be honest.
“I kept begging him for ***, and he would never give it to me.”
She claimed Magnotta would not even kiss her on the lips and only wanted to hold her hand, take her to the cinema, and wine and dine her at fancy restaurants.
Once he is said to have sucked her neck so hard that he burst blood vessels.
When not eating out, she said, Magnotta ordered pizza all the time, never cooked meals and always made the sign of the cross before he ate.
The woman also described how he was prone to mood swings and was "very cold" during arguments.
Magnotta is awaiting extradition from Germany to face charges over the alleged murder of 33-year-old Lin, who is believed to have been his lover.
Police discovered Lin's torso in a suitcase outside Magnotta's apartment, but the victim’s head remains unaccounted for.
The murder suspect fled Canada for Paris on May 26 then travelled by bus to Berlin where he was arrested and is now awaiting extradition.
In December, he emailed The Sun claiming that he could not stop killing, adding: "The urge is just too strong not to continue."

And so it appears that despite the best efforts of police, there were enough people who downloaded the gory murder scenes to ensure it continues to reappear like a bad Zombie movie. In fact, this version has already had 174,000 hits to it since June 2, when it was uploaded.
A date, coincidentally that matches up with the time period the man in jail in Berlin now was known to be in Europe in general, and in Paris in particular.

Given that he was arrested in an Internet cafe in Berlin--and his fondness for aliases--Magnotta is probably the one who uploaded this version, doing everything he can to keep his video online.And its even got a commercial attached to it, making Chaine de Jean Dupland (or Luka Magnotta) some money in the process.
