perasaan dulu waktu kecil kalo ngeliat orang sekitar menikah, yang namanya foto2an pre-wed itu ga ada deh, ato kalo pun ada, ngga heboh2 banget. paling di studio mungkin. sedangkan belakangan ini kalo ngeliat orang mo merit, foto2 pre-wednya heboh banget. foto2nya ntah sampe kemana, dengan segala props kiri kanan, on dedicated days, serasa menjadi artis sekejap. dan yang go all out kaya gini sepertinya lebih prominent di kalangan asia. ntah karena faktor social media makanya foto2 kaya gini jadi lebih kelihatan dibandingkan jaman dulu ato gimana ya. yang pasti saya sama skali ga ngerti dengan praktek pre-wed ini. ngefoto2 pas lagi acara merit ato resepsi, ato bahkan tidak pas lagi acara tapi masih di hari yang sama, itu saya bisa mengerti. karena itu adalah moment yang ingin dicapture, kejadian yang ingin dicapture. that's the actual wedding. but pre-wed? that's totally self made up by the bride and groom yang sama skali ga ada hubungannya dengan the actual prosesi nikah itu sendiri. quite pointless if i may say so. itu dari segi pragmatisnya.

and the sad thing is, setelah gaya2 dan foto sana sini, kalo saya liat hasilnya, secantik apapun itu (yes, some can be quite pretty seperti fotoshoot profesional), in the end of the day though, they are all staged. and keep in mind, they are just common people like you and me. bukan artis/model profesional yang melakukan staged photoshoot sebagai pekerjaan. so... going through that for staged, non-real-wedding pics? who are we kidding?

manusia... can be quite funny sometimes

    Spoiler for little boxes:

Little Boxes (cover by Walk off the Earth)

Little Boxes, written by Malvina Reynolds
    Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky tacky
    Little boxes on the hillside,
    Little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses
    All went to the university,
Where they were put in boxes
And they came out all the same,
    And there's doctors and lawyers,
    And business executives,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course
    And drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children
And the children go to school,
And the children go to summer camp
    And then to the university,
Where they are put in boxes
And they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business
And marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one,
And they're all made out of ticky tacky
And they all look just the same.

the more i listen to it, the more it is starting to grow on me

ini sebenarnya topik argumen klasik yang sering kudapatkan dari kecil, even with my own parents.
lahir, hidup, grow up, sekolah, kuliah, kerja, menikah, beranak, grow old, and die.

a little humor for the day, shall we?

sepertinya waktu ninggalin kantor lama, saya ngga bener2 membersihkan laci di bawah meja saya. bbrp waktu yang lalu ada yang memberikan stiker ini ke saya, katanya ketemu di laci meja kerjaku yang dulu. saya bahkan sudah ga inget pernah membeli stiker ini but it sure looked like something i would buy for fun. kalo punya mobil, bisa ditempelin ke mobil

    Spoiler for img:

another funny quote yang saya temui ntah kapan yang lalu, it went something along this line:

    Spoiler for quote:

man: oh my god, why always me?
    god: because i love you

the first thought that came through my mind: dang, this dude is sure one f*cked up twisted sadomasochist

udah lama ga mampir ya *ngambil kemoceng*
post terakhir sejak oct kemaren rupanya
well, sudah lewat tahun baru, tapi blom menulis reflection untuk taon lalu.
and actually, come to think of it, i dont think i wrote a whole lot of renungans last year. or rather, a few of them are posted somewhere else now. mo dibilang berhenti merenung sih ngga juga cuman biasanya aktivitas untuk duduk dan menuliskan pikiran cukup memakan waktu. hopefully this year i get to do that more often again.

so, let's see. last year was a turning point for me, both in terms of work and personal dev (or so i'd like to think). the first quarter of the year was one of the most memorable time of my life. no doubt about it. it was a great adventure and i had a blast. while the second half of the year, was also very interesting. there wasn't a whole lot of action, but a lot of observation.

dan tahun kemaren, saya juga merasa jauh lebih mature. padahal selama ini saya selalu by default merasa tidak cukup berpengalaman dalam kehidupan. tapi taon kemaren, observasi2 mengenai orang lain (yang juga lebih muda) di sekelilingku, i get to sense some of their inexperiences, which i attribute them to age. again, im not saying i'm all worldly now. it was just a little observation. and i guess, it only started to dawn on me that maybe i have matured a little bit.

    Spoiler for artikel:

Singapore's founder sedated, on life support

    Published: Feb 26, 2015

SINGAPORE (AP) - Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's 91-year-old founding father, remains on life support in intensive care being treated for severe pneumonia, the government said Thursday.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office said Lee is sedated and on mechanical ventilation. His doctors have restarted him on antibiotics, and are continuing to monitor him closely, it said.

Lee was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on Feb. 5.

Singapore's first prime minister, Lee ruled for 31 years until 1990, and has been credited with transforming the city-state from a sleepy tropical port to a wealthy, bustling financial hub with one of the highest incomes in the world.

In his 2013 book, "One man's View of the World," Lee said he signed a legal document informing doctors not to keep him alive if his death is imminent.

"Some time back, I had an Advanced Medical Directive done which says that if I have to be fed by a tube, and it is unlikely that I would ever be able to recover and walk about, my doctors are to remove the tube and allow me to make a quick exit. I had it signed by a lawyer friend and a doctor," he said.

He said: "There is an end to everything and I want mine to come as quickly and painlessly as possible, not with me incapacitated, half in coma in bed and with a tube going into my nostrils and down to my stomach. In such cases, one is little more than a body."

He said "with every passing day I am physically less energetic and less active."

A founding member of the ruling People's Action Party, Lee became prime minister in 1959 as Britain was gradually handing over colonial power to the new local administration. Singapore joined Malaysia in a federation in 1963, but the two split two years later. Even after Lee retired, he continued to work for the government, first as "senior minister," a non-executive advisory post created for him, and from 2004 until 2011 as "minister mentor."

Faced with rising discontent over the high cost of living, an influx of foreign laborers and growing income inequality, the PAP suffered its worst election results in 2011.

Under Lee and his successors, including his son, the current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore - known for its ban on chewing gum sales and canings for crimes some countries would rule as minor - has strictly controlled public speech and assembly though has become socially more liberal and allowed greater artistic freedom in recent years.

Lee commands immense respect among Singaporeans, who this year will celebrate the 50th independence anniversary.

In his latest book, he said he took his greatest satisfaction from making Singapore "meritocratic, corruption-free and equal for all races - and that it will endure beyond me, as it has."

"Singapore, as it stands, is the one corruption-free spot in a region where corruption is endemic," he said.

this year is a big year for spore. the big SG50. but will he make it?
we can't deny, spore won't be where it is today kalo bukan karena LKY, regardless the polarizing opinions about how he did it. after all, it is the most advanced spot in the south east asian region, dan juga potentially yang paling rapuh juga dengan dikelilingi raksasa2 di sekitarnya.

kurasa mulai dari sekarang, akan sangat menarik melihat apakah negara ini masih bisa tetep seperti ini, especially with him gone. saya rasa, singaporean dari era LKY mungkin akan lebih bisa mengapresiasi kemajuan yang ada di sana. sedangkan saya mempunyai kesan anak muda jaman skarang di sana cenderung menjadi generasi whiners, like many younger generations in advanced countries. yah, gimana ya. lahir gede dengan fasilitas yang memadai, you are bound to take things for granted, perhaps with exception for foreign born residents especially those from the developing countries. ini mungkin sala satu hal which i am grateful for, yaitu bukan terlahir di kota maju bin modern. it helps putting things into perspective.

    anyway. everything has an end.
    begitu lah hidup

    *feeling pensive*

    Spoiler for artikel:

World Moved by Chilean 14-Year-Old's Plea to Be Allowed to Die

A 14-year-old Chilean girl's request to be allowed to die has touched the world as her plea on social media has gone viral.

Valentina Maureira has cystic fibrosis, an inherited disease which primarily causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system. Most people with the disease live only into their 20s and 30s, although in recent years some patients have lived into their 40s. The disease, which requires daily care, causes recurrent infections and damages tissues, making breathing difficult.

Valentina — whose brother died of the same illness at age 6 , as she and her family told Telemundo - made a video on YouTube unbeknownst to her parents. She asked Chilean president Michele Bachelet to allow her to have a lethal injection; euthanasia is not legal in Chile.

President Bachelet, who is a pediatrician, visited the teen at the hospital on Saturday and spent an hour with her.

Although a presidential spokesman has previously said it is not possible to allow the teen to die under current laws, he did say "it's impossible not to be overcome by emotion with the girl's request."

    no kidding
it really is high time for the world to allow this

i've been meaning to write about women in STEM, but im not sure how to approach this.

hari ini google doodle melakukan tribute pada sally ride, wanita amerika pertama yang ngorbit ke antariksa. dan di thread sebelah juga lagi ngobrolin tentang kesetaraan gender. so... i guess that's a good segway into the topic

    so, apa hubungannya dengan STEM?
STEM adalah istilah / singkatan yang dipake untuk mendeskripsikan bidang science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. historically, bidang2 STEM ini biasa didominasi oleh cowo. however, sekian taon belakangan ini saya melihat banyak sekali effort yang dilakukan untuk mendorong girls into STEM for gender diversity. and i genuinely think it's a great thing, gender racial diversity that is, or for anyone to be in STEM fields. sekolah2 mulai ada program STEM untuk anak perempuan, ato ada pula keringanan biaya untuk perempuan yang ingin belajar dalam bidang2 ini, ato pula ada alokasi kuota intake murid perempuan, dll. again, i think that's all great. but what i fear is, how far is too far? adakah reverse sexism?

i have always been in STEM. dari sekolah, kuliah, and throughout my professional life. dalam keluarga pun banyak wanita2 mandiri dan ada juga bbrp yang di STEM. saya pribadi tidak pernah berpikiran untuk memasuki STEM untuk mengkontribusikan diri pada gender diversity. saya pada dasarnya memang tertarik dalam bidang ini. i did, and am still doing it for myself. no one else.

sekitar tahun lalu, saya terlibat dalam diskusi dengan bbrp orang lain (cowo) yang juga di STEM. mereka pun mendukung women in STEM. dalam diskusi itu, ide bahwa bagaimana kalo sekola2 STEM ini memakai quota 50-50 cewe/cowo. or even 100% cewe.

you know, i appreciate the gesture. and i get the whole thing about encouraging women in STEM. but there is something else nagging behind me. would i be content kalo saya diberi sesuatu hanya karena genderku? karena kalo iya, maka menurutku itu tidak adil buat para cowo. kalo saya mempercayai kesetaraan manusia, maka penerimaan murid pun harus gender-blind.

and here's the problem dengan aktivis2 yang kebablasan (yang kadang saya lihat terjadi pada kaum feminis juga). alih2 ingin mendukung kaum minoritas, jangan sampai pula merugikan kaum yang lain.

    it's a double edge sword.

    adakah reverse sexism?
There's no such thing as reverse sexism. No matter which gender being discriminated, it's still sexism.

I agree that it's a double edged sword. This doesn't apply to only genders but also racial diversity. Lots of colleges make leeways for minorities. Some top schools are even being accused of setting quota for the admittance of Asians. It's a loss for both the talented students and the school, just for the sake of racial diversity.

    Spoiler for discussion:

the discussion starts at around 1:00:00 mark
    https://youtu.be/BzofVVNVetg?t=3600

i have to say, i was quite impressed dengan kematengan konsep yang dipaparkan oleh sala satu participant hangout ini. dan selain itu juga ada banyak pendapat2 bagus dari participant2 laen, baik pro maupun kontranya.

Spoiler for more about and why:

    and more recent update

and this guy sums it up quite succinctly
    Spoiler for another take:

honestly, saya ngerasa network diaspora indonesia ini kurang oke nih marketing dan outreach-nya mungkin perlu belajar dari strategi spore dikit. setau saya negara singapura malah ada badan khusus (dibentuk secara resmi oleh pemerintah) yang terus menerus meng-outreach ke diaspora warga negaranya, selalu ngadain event untuk ngumpulin dan ngebikin komunitas warganya yang di LN, maupun menjembatani orang asing yang ingin berinvestasi ato merekrut orang ke negaranya. i didnt know they had such thing, sampe bbrp waktu yang lalu saya ketemu pns spore yang lagi dinas di sini yang kerjaannya persis melakukan itu. and i have attended a few of their events, and some of them are no joke.

anyway, jadi tadi setelah nonton kick andy saya ngegoogle2 lagi tentang diaspora indonesia, and i came across 2 similar websites. oalah, yang mana yang resmi nih? mana infonya juga rada2 ngga dimaintain dengan baik, banyak yang masi bolong2. saya sebagai 'visitor baru', klik sana sini ngga nemu gimana caranya ngintip ke dalam network ini. is there any newsletter? how do i tap into the network? or maybe i didnt look hard enough. dan setelah baru nonton video kedua di atas, saya baru tau mereka lagi ada fundraisingnya (http://www.gofundme.com/9200ek) . mungkin karena movement ini rada2 grassroot kali ya, dengan resourcesnya terbatas. apalagi ini juga grup advokasi yang rada independent juga.

im definitely gonna keep an eye on this.

berhubung nih thread rada terlantar, post ini masuk sini aja deh

kemaren2 slack sempat down, di grup kantor kami pun koneksinya yoyo-ing. on off.

but look here. great damage control by their social team.

    how so? ibaratnya kira2 begini.

    pengusaha : ahok
    perusahaan : kota jakarta

amazingly, dia bener2 memanfaatkan (exploitasi) hak-nya sebagai landlord, who has plausible legal authority under his belt to even attempt it (yes, even though he is challenged in court, but that's besides the point).

i tell ya, this guy is shrewd

Warned of a Crash, Start-Ups in Silicon Valley Narrow Their Focus

tech startups is a weird world, terutama mereka yang berada di bay area, where silicon valley is. i have always wondered, seberapa lama mereka bisa bertahan dengan overspending dan overcapitalizing. buat perusahaan yang berhati2 dan mulai mengubah mentalitasnya, good for them. buat perusahaan yang masih terlena dengan cara lama, good luck.

kesan saya, property SF and general living cost di sana are way way way overpriced. dan persis karena tech industry ini lah yang mengangkat harga real estate di sana, termasuk biaya hidup sehari2. i can't say im comfortable with getting a property there. rasanya mahalnya kehidupan di sana bener2 di-propped up oleh tech industry. sedangkan saya ngga yakin the tech industry can continue to support that. i really do think a crash is coming. it's just part of the cycle. im not saying it will disappear. silicon valley will always be silicon valley, kurasa tech innovation hub yang sudah berada di sana akan tetep berada di sana.

but if we are talking about real estate in sf specifically, that can be iffy. ketergantungannya pada tech industry terlalu besar. lain cerita dengan katakan kota lain seperti new york city, yang mana juga adalah sala satu kota termahal di amrik dengan harga propertynya yang juga sangat tinggi. tapi apa yang membuat nyc lebih aman in terms of real estate adalah keberagaman industrynya (at least that's what i think). nyc bole dikatakan mempunya tech scene kedua terbesar setelah bay area, and not only that, nyc juga ada sektor finansial, media, entertainment, health/medical, fashion, you name it. sehingga, kalo pun ada suatu industry yang crash, other industries can keep it afloat. just look at the financial collapse of 2008, yes, real estate tanked throughout the nation, and yes that includes nyc, tapi harga property di nyc bole dikatakan hanya dipped a little, relatively. kalo pun menurun, it didn't completely go underwater, tidak seperti daerah2 lain yang bener2 crashed and burned. personally, kupikir diversity ini lah yang membuatnya bertahan. and sf doesn't have that. unless harga property yang dikatakan oleh si kontraktor itu bener2 ridiculously low, then sure. otherwise, if you are willing to spend that much amount of money on a property, mending pilih di tempat yang lebih "aman", in terms of economy. (keamanan dari teroris attack is another story )

ini menurut teori saya yang amatiran

have i ever said i just love stephen colbert?
i find myself watching the late show quite a lot lately sejak era trump

i mean, really. for me, tiada hari tanpa cursing tiap kali baca berita mengenai trump
he is the most ridiculous guy that ever existed
but, this is real life. a freakin real life, man
sometimes i wonder, trump ini sebenarnya lagi becanda ato beneren, because very often it gets too ridiculous to be a real thing
so it's no wonder that most comedians find him to be a great subject to ridicule
and this mr colbert here, is doing a freakin great job at ridiculing him
that's my silver lining di kondisi politik yang lagi berantakan saat ini

so, thank you mr colbert, and congrats for your emmy nominations

BOY SCOUTS: TOP LEADERS DIDN'T CALL TRUMP TO PRAISE SPEECH

omg, when you thought it couldnt get even more embarrassing

just, what, last week? trump menghadiri jamboree boy scout (pramuka), and gave a terrible speech.
c'mon, these are boy scouts. kalo ngasi pidato, yang inspiring dan menyatukan kek. ini malah pidatonya dibikan political dan partisan banget, bukannya itu justru memecah belah? this guy is nonsensical. saking parahnya, pihak boy scout sampe mengeluarkan pernyataan minta maaf ke para keluarga audiens mengenai pidato trump. how embarrassing is that?

    and now...

Trump told The Wall Street Journal in an interview published Wednesday, "I got a call from the head of the Boy Scouts saying it was the greatest speech that was ever made to them, and they were very thankful." Politico published the transcript of the interview.

    ...

"We are unaware of any such call," the Boy Scouts responded in a statement. It specified that neither of the organization's two top leaders - President Randall Stephenson and Chief Scout Executive Mike Surbaugh - had placed such a call.
