Darwin tahun 1859 telah memberikan hipotesis mengenai asal usul kehidupan. Menurutnya, syarat awal kehidupan adalah suatu kolam hangat yang berisi segala macam amonia dan garam fosfat, dengan bantuan cahaya, panas, listrik, dsb. Penjelasan Darwin terlalu sederhana dan belum dapat dipandang sebagai teori yang serius.
