A Berywn, Illinois woman is being investigated by police and child welfare officials after the death of her 14-year-old son from pneumonia. Police who searched the house found over 200 animals, along with feces and squalor, in the house where she lived with her five children.
Paramedics responded on Thursday to a call that the 14-year-old boy was unresponsive on the lawn at the family home, a source familiar with the investigation reports. The boy was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn and later pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office reported on Friday that he died of bronchopneumonia.
Police obtained a search warrant and searched the home on Friday, according to the source, finding more than 100 cats, birds, an overweight raccoon, a fruit bat, two dogs and several kinkajous, (raccoon-like creatures native to Central and South America) amid feces and squalid conditions.
Terri Sparks, public relations director for the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge said, “The horrible thing is that it’s another case of hoarding…They think they’re helping, but it’s really just detrimental to them and to the animals.”
Authorities said the boy’s mother was being held at the Berwyn police station (though no charges had been filed), while three of her other children (ages 12 to 17) were with the Department of Children of Family Services after being treated for flulike symptoms. Kendall Marlowe, a spokesman for DCFS, said a fourth sibling, 18, was being treated at the hospital. It was unknown whether the animals or living conditions contributed to the children’s illnesses, according to authorities.
Marlowe expressed concern that the children had been kept isolated at the home. “Social isolation is one of the most powerful risk factors for serious harm to children…If we as a community never knock on that door that no one ever seems to open, we may never know how bad it is or how we can help.”
The children’s father has been in prison since 2008.
The animals were removed from the home with the help of the Animal Welfare League in Chicago Ridge and nearly 200 of them were brought to their shelter, according to a release from the organization.

Pneumonia ga ada hub nya sm hewan kecuali si anak emang alergi sm bulu2.mungkin rumah itu ga pernah di angin2 jadi udara yang ada ga pernah ganti.kalo gt caranya bukan cuman anak aja yg sakit,hewan2nya juga pasti ga sehat
