The costs of the "examination hell" have been evident not only in a grim and joyless adolescence for many, if not most, young South Koreans, but also in the number of suicides caused by the constant pressure of tests.[18] Often, those who committed suicide have been top achievers who suffered from despair after experiencing a slump in test performance.[17][19] Roughly 53.4% of South Korean youths who consider suicide cite excessive competition as the reason.[9] the multiple choice format of periodic high school tests and university entrance examinations has left students little opportunity to develop their creative talents.[13] A "facts only" orientation has promoted a cramped view of the world that has tended to spill over into other areas of life.[citation needed]

The Annual Report on China’s Education (2014), also known as the Blue Book of Education, looked at the apparent causes of 79 suicides by elementary and high school students last year, reports the China Daily on May 14. It found that just under 93 percent happened after arguments with teachers or were attributed to the intense pressure to study put on young people.
“The pursuit of high test scores not only brings pressure to students, but also to teachers, making the relationship between teachers and students worse, especially when students perform poorly in exams, which finally leads to some students’ suicides,” concluded Cheng Pingyuan, a professor of Nanjing Normal University and the main author of the study.

A report by the Britain-based Samaritans suicide prevention service found that 70 per cent of those self-harming, with accompanying suicidal thoughts, did this because of worries about schoolwork, a much higher figure than other stated problems (such as relationships, bullying and parental issues).
In Hong Kong, there has been less study of mental health problems in the young. However, recent research has revealed very worrying facts.
A 2012 study by Daniel Shek and Lu Yu at the Polytechnic University found almost a third of 3,328 students questioned reported self-harming and more than 13 per cent had suicidal thoughts.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among Hong Kong youth. A report in the journal Suicide and Life Threatening Behaviour in 2006, by Margaret Lee and her colleagues at the Chinese University, found that suicidal thoughts among adolescents were strongly associated with test anxiety and parental dissatisfaction with academic performance. A further study by Lee of 3,383 students in 2009 also found strong correlations between suicidal feelings and school failure.
