People's Pope, Man of the Year
Selamat kepada Bapa suci Paus Fransiskus yang Rabu kemarin dinobatkan sebagai Man of The Year oleh majalah TIME. Seorang Paus yang bergabung dengan ordo Jesuit tahun 1957 ini dulu pernah jadi tukang bersih-bersih, penjaga night club, teknisi dan akhirnya guru sastra. Berbeda dengan dua pendahulunya yang Profesor Teologi, Paus Fransiskus berprinsip bahwa ummat membutuhkan pelayanan yang nyata, bukan teologi yang mbulet.
Beberapa pernyataannya dianggap kontroversial dan menuai kecaman, tapi bagi kaum minoritas, pernyataan-pernyataan itu menjadi angin segar.
Ia dicatat pernah berkata:"saya percaya pada Tuhan, tapi bukan Tuhan Katolik", lalu "Atheis juga mendapat pengampunan dari Tuhan bila mereka berbuat baik", dan ketika ditanya soal kaum homoseksual dia menjawab "saya ini siapa sehingga bisa menghakimi mereka?"

Saya sendiri melihat Paus Fransiskus tidak melakukan perubahan doktriner, tapi jelas dia telah merubah nada sikap gereja terhadap isu-isu yang relevan di abad 21 ini.
